EXPEREINCES

Curated Journeys

Spirit Mountain is not the kind of place you simply visit—it is a place you enter, explore, and occasionally lose track of time in. Walk the farm with a cup of coffee grown beneath your feet, join an immersive Origin Trip, follow the calls of mountain birds, ride forest trails, or hike into landscapes that still feel wonderfully untamed. Our curated experiences are available by reservation and carry an additional cost, but access to the farm for the day remains complimentary. Come curious. Wear good shoes. And do not be surprised if you stay longer than planned.

Exploration with a Day Pass
Nº 01

Exploration with a Day Pass

Spend a day exploring Spirit Mountain at your own pace. Follow trails through the shade-grown coffee forest, listen for endemic birds, discover hidden streams, and find a quiet overlook where the mountains seem to go on forever. With 135 hectares of working coffee farm and ecological reserve, there is far too much to experience in a single day—but you are certainly free to try.

Spirit Mountain is an operating farm, not a traditional visitor attraction. Our team will be nearby and happy to offer suggestions or point you in the right direction, but your exploration will be largely self-guided. Come prepared with plenty of food and water, rain gear, good hiking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. Day access to the farm is currently complimentary.

Guided Coffee Tours
Nº 02

Guided Coffee Tours

For a closer look at the work behind every cup, join one of our team members for a guided 90-minute walk through the coffee farm. You will explore our shade-grown coffee forest and learn how coffee is cultivated within a living ecosystem—from caring for the soil and protecting the forest canopy to harvesting ripe cherries and processing them at the farm. Because Spirit Mountain is a working farm, what you encounter will change with the season; no two tours are exactly alike. Tours are currently offered in Spanish, providing an authentic opportunity to learn directly from the people who know and care for this land every day. Good walking shoes are strongly recommended—coffee, after all, rarely grows on flat ground at Spirit Mountain

Tri-Mountain MTB Park

Nº 03

Tri-Mountain MTB Park

Spirit Mountain is home to Tri-Mountain MTB Park—the Dominican Republic’s premier purpose-built enduro and downhill gravity park, and quite possibly one of the best riding destinations in the Caribbean. Five distinct trails descend through nearly 2,000 vertical feet of coffee forest and rugged mountain terrain, with additional trails already in the works.

The park includes technical features for a range of experienced riders, but not every feature is appropriate for everyone. Larger jumps, drops, and road gaps should be attempted only by highly capable riders with the necessary experience and equipment. Pre-ride the trails, inspect unfamiliar features, and always ride within your abilities.

Day access is RD$500 per rider. There is currently no lift service, so bring a truck and your own shuttle crew—or arrive with a fully charged e-bike and strong legs. Helmets and appropriate protective equipment are essential. Gravity handles the ride down; getting back to the top is up to you.

Hiking and Getting Wonderfully Lost
Nº 04

Hiking and Getting Wonderfully Lost

Spirit Mountain offers more than 30 kilometers of trails across 350 acres of working coffee farm, ecological reserve, mountain ridges, hidden streams, and tropical forest. Wander beneath the shade-grown coffee canopy, cross cool mountain water, listen for endemic birds, or climb into the higher reaches of the property, where the forest opens to expansive views across the valleys and toward some of the tallest mountains in the Caribbean.

There is no single “correct” way to explore Spirit Mountain. Choose a trail, follow your curiosity, and allow yourself to get a little lost—intentionally, of course. Around the next bend you may encounter our farm team at work, a sudden rain shower, a hidden waterfall, a Hispaniolan Trogon, or a view that convinces you to sit down and forget whatever schedule you thought you had.

One important word of caution: some trails are purpose-built gravity lines within Tri-Mountain MTB Park. If a trail looks as though it would be unusually fun to descend on a mountain bike, there is a good chance someone else has had exactly the same thought—and that rider may be approaching very quickly. Remain alert, listen for riders, avoid lingering on downhill features, and step completely off the trail when a rider approaches.

Our team is always happy to recommend a route or point you toward a favorite destination, but most hiking is self-guided. Bring plenty of food and water, rain gear, good hiking shoes, and enough daylight for the return journey. There is far more to explore than anyone can cover in one visit, which is really just our way of giving you a reason to come back.

Birdwatching: The Forest Is Never Quiet

Birdwatching: The Forest Is Never Quiet

Hispaniola is one of the most extraordinary birding destinations in the Caribbean, home to approximately 30 species found nowhere else on Earth. Spirit Mountain’s elevation, restored forest, protected streams, and multilayered shade-coffee canopy create refuge for an astonishing variety of birdlife—from tiny todies and chattering parakeets to the Hispaniolan Woodpecker, the elusive Hispaniolan Trogon, and the haunting song of the Jilguero drifting through the morning mist.During the winter months, the farm becomes even more alive.

Migratory birds arrive from North America and settle into the canopy, filling nearly every layer of the forest with movement, color, and song. Some have traveled thousands of miles to spend the season here—which makes your journey up the mountain seem considerably less impressive.Birdwatching at Spirit Mountain is not limited to a designated overlook or a carefully scheduled hour. It happens everywhere: beside the coffee trees, along forest trails, near the streams, and high on the ridges. The real invitation is simply to become intentionally aware. Walk more slowly. Listen before you look. Notice the flicker of movement beneath a leaf or the unfamiliar call coming from somewhere above you.

The longer you pay attention, the more the forest begins to reveal.Bring binoculars, good hiking shoes, rain protection, and patience. Serious birders may arrive with a life list and a carefully organized field guide; the rest of us are perfectly content pointing into the canopy and whispering, “What was that?” Either approach is welcome. At Spirit Mountain, the birds are not an attraction added to the landscape—they are part of the living proof that when a forest is protected and patiently restored, life finds its way home.

Horseback Riding
Nº 06

Horseback Riding

Long before Spirit Mountain had roads, our family explored the farm on horseback. We once kept a herd of more than 20 horses, and our daughters, Keren and Kate, spent much of their childhood riding across the property—through coffee groves, over streams, and straight up and down mountainsides.

Their style was sometimes less “peaceful trail ride” and a little more *The Man from Snowy River*, but those adventures became some of our family’s most treasured memories.Today, horseback riding remains one of the most timeless ways to experience the farm. Guided rides follow mountain paths through the working coffee plantation and tropical forest, reaching hidden corners and scenic overlooks that reveal an entirely different side of Spirit Mountain.

The pace is slower, the perspective is higher, and the connection to the landscape feels much as it did before the roads arrived. We still keep a few horses at the farm, but most rides are arranged with trusted neighbors who provide additional horses and local guides. Advance notice is required, and availability may vary. Let us know before your visit, and we will do our best to organize an experience suited to your group and riding ability—whether you prefer a quiet walk through the coffee trees or have always secretly imagined yourself riding down a mountain like Jim Craig.

School Groups: Learning Beyond the Classroom
Nº 07

School Groups: Learning Beyond the Classroom

Spirit Mountain offers school groups a living classroom across 350 acres of working coffee farm and ecological reserve. Teachers bring their own curriculum and educational objectives; our team helps coordinate logistics and develop compelling, place-based subject matter around coffee, regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, watersheds, conservation, and Dominican mountain culture.

Nature does not always follow the syllabus—but that is often where the best learning begins.Camp Spirit Discovery was designed specifically for schools seeking a multi-day outdoor education experience. The camp is ideally suited for groups of 12 to 24 students and is well equipped to support a full week of exploration, hands-on learning, service, reflection, and shared adventure. We recommend a minimum stay of two nights, although four nights—or a full week—allows students to move beyond simply visiting the farm and begin to understand its rhythms and interconnected systems.

Teachers, parents, visiting specialists, and other support personnel may also stay in our A-Frames or treehouses, providing additional comfort while remaining close to the student group. Contact us well in advance, and we will collaborate with your school to shape a safe, meaningful experience around your curriculum and goals.

Coffee Origin Trips: From Mountain to Coast
Nº 08

Coffee Origin Trips: From Mountain to Coast

A Spirit Mountain Origin Trip is not a polished tour designed to show you only the pretty parts of coffee. It is a five-day immersion into the people, work, culture, and occasional controlled chaos behind every cup—beginning on our family’s coffee farm high in the Dominican mountains and ending on the white-sand beaches of Cabarete. For three days, you will live close to the rhythms of a working farm.

Depending on the season, you may pick ripe cherries on steep hillsides, learn how coffee is fermented, washed, and dried, visit the dry mill, and cup coffees alongside people who have dedicated their lives to understanding them. You will spend time with our farm team—the real experts—and with Kathryn Lake of Farm to Cup Coffee Consulting, who grew up at Spirit Mountain and now helps connect producers more directly with roasters and coffee professionals around the world. There are no middlemen, no carefully rehearsed scripts, and very few opportunities to keep your shoes clean.

Then, after the farm has expanded your knowledge, tested a few muscles you may have forgotten about, and permanently changed how you look at your morning coffee, we head north to Cabarete. There, the mountains give way to turquoise water, ocean air, and a well-earned chance to process everything you have experienced—preferably with your feet in the sand and something cold in your hand.Designed for roasters, café owners, baristas, and genuinely curious coffee lovers, each trip includes accommodations, meals, transportation, and thoughtfully curated experiences from arrival through departure. You will come away understanding far more than how coffee moves from seed to cup. You will know the people behind it, the land that shaped it, and why origin is not simply a place on a label.Come prepared. Leave transformed. Go home a storyteller.
